Alzheimer’s Disease is one of the most prevailing neurological diseases plaguing senior citizens in the U.S, earning its place as place as the seventh leading cause of death, claiming nearly 120,000 lives in 2021 according to the CDC. This disease is characterized by the gradual deterioration of a person’s cognitive abilities caused by protein deposits known as Amyloid plaques, along with neurofibrillary tangles within the brain, resulting in neuron death and brain shrinkage. Many different varieties of dementia exist; however, Alzheimer’s most commonly affects the areas of the brain that are responsible for memory and reasoning, and those suffering with Alzheimer’s may exhibit class symptoms of memory loss and altered personality that will advance to hallucinations, further behavioral changes, limited mobility, and a weakened immune system. Genetics is one of the factors that determine a person’s likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Certain health afflictions, such as cerebrovascular diseases (stroke, aneurysm, conditions resulting in decreased blood flow to the brain), diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure increase this risk.

Do you have a family member with Alzheimer’s in need of care? We provide caregivers for clients in Palo Alto, CA and surrounding areas to provide various non-medical services. Please contact us at amicares.com/contact-us/ for more information on how to get started.
