The Power of Virtual Socializing: How Video Games Can Help Seniors Stay Socially Active

As we look for more ways to help our seniors stay connected and engaged, a great yet overlooked tool is arising. Especially when mobility and distance start to become challenging, social engagement through video games for seniors can unlock new opportunities for connection and well-being.

In this blog, we will go over why having social activity matters, how video games can help, what the research tells us, and how this can be implemented.

Why social activity matters

Staying socially engaged plays an important role in emotional well-being, cognitive resilience, and quality of life for seniors. When seniors have less contact with friends, family, or community, their feelings of loneliness and isolation can increase which can pose health risks,

This is where video games can come in and form virtual interactions in games which bring people together.

What the research tells us about video games for seniors

There’s been growing research showing us that video games can benefit seniors’ social life and overall well-being.

One of which is a field study done in a Swiss retirement home which found that the game mode is an important factor when determining the type of social interactions seniors receive when playing games. This study concluded that competitive modes shared more laughter, while creative modes included more verbal interactions.

An article also found that while gaming is often stereotyped as isolating, it can actually contribute to well-being due to its social aspects.

Another study found that even for seniors with serious mental illnesses, group play with exergames (videogames that require physical movements) led to a positive social contact and motivation to engage in taking risks.

These findings support the idea that social engagement through video games for seniors can provide real benefits. Not just fun, but better opportunities for seniors to remain socially active.

Practical tips for home care agencies and caregivers

Here are some ways to incorporate social engagement through video games for seniors:

  1. Choose accessible games – Look for games with simple controls, clear visuals, and less complexity. This will reduce frustration and increase their willingness to participate.
  2. Encourage co-play – Whether it’s a grandchild, family member, or another senior, playing together enhances the social aspect.
  3. Set up regular “game dates.” Like a usual coffee date, schedule a weekly game session to foster social connections.
  4. Be mindful of privacy and tech support. Make sure the platform is secure and that any required technical help is available.

Final thoughts

As a home care agency, we fully support individuals’ wellness as a whole. Social engagement through the use of video games aren’t substituting human connection – they are a bridge to it. By helping seniors pick up a controller and laugh with others, you can help them open up fresh social groups in the comfort of their own home.

By doing so, this can help better emotional health, reduce isolation, and improve their overall quality of life.
